Fauré was fortunate enough to have been taught by Saint-Saëns and the two developed a lifelong friendship, so it’s fitting that this programme explores and highlights their differing approaches in these early piano quartets. Brooding, charming, dark, rhythmic, melodic, glittering and humorous by turns, these masterpieces are rightly known as some of the loveliest chamber music for this combination of instruments.
